Zinc
Installation of recycled shelves, magnets, and collages
"Since the truth is everywhere suppressed and therefore hard to write, most people see it as a matter of stance. It is believed that only courage is
required. But they forget the second difficulty – finding the truth. It cannot be said that finding the truth is easy. Above all, it is already difficult to determine which truth is worth
telling..."
—
Bertolt Brecht,
Five Difficulties in Writing the Truth
The work "Zinc" emerges within raw seams and joints, consciously revealing its own process of creation to the viewer.
Composed of two mass-produced metal shelves and magnets holding fragments of printed material, the installation points to the transience and potential collapse of the structure. It is a
gesture that affirms the truth through visible artificiality—here, the mask never slips; instead, the mechanism of the
artistic work is laid bare.
Drawing on Brecht’s concept of Verfremdungseffekt (estrangement effect), the collage work in "Zinc" shifts the conventional
perception of information. In the clutter of cracks and fragments, the artist acts as a collector of traces of contemporary society, linking seemingly disconnected documents into new imaginative
chains. Starting from her position as a woman and an artist, Šejma Fere transforms discarded objects into a laboratory of
performative miniatures, where raw joints give weight to invisible processes and open a space for a dialectical critique of everyday life.
